Gameplay[edit | edit source]
The player takes control of an astronaut with four health points. Once it hits an enemy, a heart is lost, with the loss of all four hearts resulting in a game over. The astronaut must jump around various planets by approaching their center of gravity, with each planet type having different properties.
The goal of the game is to collect all the stars in each level, with the total amount and the collected stars being displayed at the bottom-right corner of the screen. All stars have a blue glow except for one, which has a pink glow. If the pink-glowing one is collected it rewards double the amount of points, and once collected, another blue-glowing star will have its glow turn pink, and if this order is followed the player can obtain more points. If the player collects a star other than the pink-glowing one, then that star turns into a blue-glowing one and the extra points can no longer be collected.
Once all stars in a level are collected, a black hole is opened and the player must take the astronaut there in order to finish the level and progress to the next one.

Ending[edit | edit source]
This collapsible box contains a spoiler! Use [show] to reveal.
The ending depicts the astronaut on a planet in space with partially pink and feminine looking astronaut in front of him, two domed shaped house behind her, and a black hole present on the far left side. Words above, in white text outlined in blue, read, "congratulations!" with smaller words below in blue text reading, "you made it home!".
Interactive objects[edit | edit source]
- Stars - Stars are found scattered around. They must all be collected to open a black hole. Blue glowing stars are worth 250 points and pink glowing ones are worth 500 points.
- Black holes - Once all stars in the level are collected a black hole will appear. If jumped to the astronaut will get sucked into them and go onto the next level.
Enemies[edit | edit source]
- Brain aliens - It walks slowly around and causes one heart to be lost if touched.
- Blue masked robot - It will move when the Astronaut moves and stop when he does. When touched one heart is lost.
- Green masked robots - A faster version of the blue masked robot, it too will also follow the astronaut. If touched one heart will be lost.
- Worms - It moves slower than the blue masked robot and will follow the player. It will always take the faster route to the astronaut.
- Blue jumping aliens - It jumps up and down and will cause one heart to be lost if touched.
- Green jumping aliens - It jumps around a planet and causes one heart to be lost when touched.
- Jumping octopuses - It is small and jumps in and out of a hole and can only be found on purple planets. If touched one heart is lost.
- UFOs - It is the last enemy found in the game, seen only in level 14 and 15. It zooms back and fourth and will take one heart away if touched.
Planets[edit | edit source]
- Purple planets - These are normal planets and don't feature any special properties other than being the only planet that has Jumping Octopuses on them.
- Yellow planets - Allow the astronaut to run faster and to jump farther.
- Green planets - Cause the astronaut to walk slower and jump little only allowing him to jump to planets that are very close.
- Metal planets - Metal planets act like purple planets.
- Small planets - These are very tiny but act like normal planets.
- Electric planets - These are big and covered with metal. After a few second they will make their surface of them covered with blue electricity. A well timed jump will allow the astronaut to not take damage from the electricity.
- Hot planets - These are the most dangerous planet encountered. They have a black crust on them that allows safe travel around them. But in between the black crust is harmful red liquid. Sometimes there is small parts of the black crust that is between large parts of liquid.
- Ice planets - These have a slippery surface that causes the astronaut to move slowly in one direction but will soon speed up over time.
Development[edit | edit source]
Space Hopper was developed in one month. Mat Annal explains that while developing the game making the astronaut go around the planets wasn't difficult, however making the astronaut catch the gravity and land properly on others was problematic.[4]

Glitches[edit | edit source]
- When the Flash version of the game was available on Nitrome.com, clicking the Nitrome logo in the credits section would've taken the player to the Nitrome website, except it would've been displayed inside the game window. This also happened with the browser version of Silly Sausage in Meat Land.

Music[edit | edit source]
The music for Space Hopper was composed by Lee Nicklen on March 2006[5], roughly a year and two months before the game's release. As early as December 17th, 2011[6], the music for the game was made available for listening on Kayotix[5], Lee Nicklen's website, with the tracks being watermarked so that the listener would have to purchase the songs through Nitrome's Shop to listen to them without interruptions. The music was later made available to stream for free in Soundcloud[7] on May 12th, 2012.
The naming of the tracks may differ between Kayotix and Soundcloud.
