Food (Shovel Knight Dig)

Food are items in Shovel Knight Dig. Two distinct types of food are encountered in the game: food items; which can restore and enhance health and magic and can be obtained from merchants, and food pick-ups; which restore health and can be found in stages.

Food pick-ups

Food pick-ups are pick-ups that replenish health when touched and restore 1 HP of health for all pets except the Troupple Familiar. They can be obtained from the Drill Capsule when less than three Cogs are collected or in rare circumstances found laying on ground in the main cavern area or in siderooms under a Platter. The Drill Capsule will throw out mutton if two Cogs are collected and an apple if only one is found. In much rarer instances, food can be encountered in siderooms just laying on a platform. If Brittle Beetle Barbecue is possessed, food will not restore pet health.

Food also appears in the following areas:

• During Scrap Knight's boss fight, she can sometimes drop a carrot during the first phase, throw an apple when throwing trash, drop an apple when sucking Shovel Knight into her bag, and a carrot while running around her bag.

Food also appears during the possessed Drill Knight boss battle in Crystal Core, where it is brought into the stage by Altius.

The following food appears in the game. Unlike other food pick-ups, turkeys are rarely encountered. Food can be destroyed by assembled drills found in Smeltworks and in Secret Fountain will float in the direction of water. Apple Core and Chewed Chicken Leg appear in the Knightmares mode.

Food more commonly appears in the following situations:

• When a stage is under the effect of the food stage enhancement, denoted by that stage's path at the end of the prior level having a sign with an apple on it. When under this effect, there is a high chance that at least one sideroom with a food pick-up will appear, enemies can drop food when killed, Dig Piles have the chance to contain food, and platters can appear in the main gameplay area of Acts.
• When a stage is under the effect of the toxic gas stage enhancement, which is denoted by a stage's path having a sign with a skull and crossbones. This stage enhancement causes food to regularly appear from Dig Piles, killing enemies, and from slashing blades of grass in Secret Fountain. There is also a chance for food to be encountered laying on the ground in the main stage area.
• Having the Food Platter Accessory, which can cause the following events to happen: enemies to drop food, Spore Knight upon being defeated dropping an apple and some gems into the stage selection room.
• Food can be found in yellow chests when Shovel Knight is using the Scrounger Suit.

Food items

Food items can restore and enhance health and magic and can be purchased from Gastronomole or obtained from Tom Bola. Gastronomole's availability of food items varies based on world and prices can also vary, unlike Tom Bola who can select any food item in the game regardless of world.

HP restoring food

The following food items restore HP and all have the description "Refills <HP> health." Each food item will also each heal 1 HP for all following pets except the Troupple Familiar. If Brittle Beetle Barbecue is possessed, food items will no longer heal pet health.

Fortified Roast

Fortified Roast will refill all of Shovel Knight's health and the health of all his pets (except Troupples) and grant him 3 shields. Purchasing another Fortified Roast while still having shields from a previously bought Fortified Roast will add 3 more shields to the current amount of shields.

Damage sustained that removes a shield will not cause pets to lose health. Shields do not prevent Brash Bracers armour from breaking, and when it is broken a shield will be lost. Fortified Roast can be purchased from Gastronomole in Mushroom Mines, Smeltworks, The Grub Pit, and Drill Knight's Castle.

Blinding Hot Curry

Blinding Hot Curry doubles the total amount of health bubbles currently possessed and only shows health at the stage selection room and the room prior to boss fights. The health bubbles added are filled. Shields from Fortified Roast acquired after obtaining Blinding Hot Curry are not hidden. When using this item while wearing Brash Bracers armour, when the armour is broken the max health sequentially decreases and is accompanied by a unique sound effect.

Blinding Hot Curry can be purchased in Smeltworks.

Brittle Beetle Barbecue

Brittle Beetle Barbecue replaces all health with 24 shields. Shovel Knight's health and the health of any following pets will no longer be restored via food pick-ups or food purchased from Gastronomole. The Drill Capsule health option will restore shields, which will also restore pet health, and if less than three Cogs have been collected shields will be restored based off how many Cogs have been collected.

The Troupple Familiar will restore 2 shields below 4 shields of health and the Health Upgrade and food that raises max HP will increase max health by 1 shield. When wearing the Conjuror's Coat armour, Shovel Knight will still only lose a max of one shield every time he takes damage.

Gastronomole will sometimes only sell food of a certain type instead of randomly selecting any food from that world. These food themes vary depending on world.
