Rustyard

Please have a look at the Rustyard Template. I'm trying to revise the pages related to Rustyard and I'm keeping the template as guideline. But I noticed that the template of Rustyard isn't complete as well. More, I'm thinking that the arrow buttons should be listed under buttons and not under blocks and Coloured Buttons and the other one should be listed on the Buttons_Rustyard page and not on the Blocks. Mind having a look and checking what's incomplete. Thanks!   Sim533

Hello people, this is SQhi. As we know at the start of July anonymous editing was blocked on Nitrome Wiki network. The purpose of this discussion is to bring the active and prominent users together to inform our readers and followers of this drastic change.

I am sending this message to NOBODY, Santi, Ayernam, Emite, Takeshi and NTPYTO. If you feel that anyone else should be brought into the discussion, please let me know (talk page).

The first three steps I am proposing are as follows.

1. Through Wikinews. I suggest this entry.

• 21 July - It is now necessary to have a Nitrome Wiki account to edit and comment on Nitrome Wiki and its sister wikis. This is due to changes in US law which does not allow our website to track IP addresses of children. If you would like to gain access to editing, commenting and more, please sign up for an account. You do need to be thirteen or older. official press release

2. Through banner on our Main Page (and/or through SiteNotice)

Dear readers, you now need to sign up for a Wikia account to edit and comment on Nitrome Wiki and its sister wikis. Changes to US law in which our website is hosted prevents us from tracking anonymous contributions from children using IP addresses. IP addresses can be used to approximate the location of internet access of children. official press release

Nitrome Wiki congratulates Nitrome on their official launch of Nitrome Profiles.

• Since 1 July 2013, it is now necessary for all editors and blog commenters on Nitrome Wiki and its sister wikis(Fan Fiction Wiki and Pixel Love Wiki) to have a valid Wikia account.

Revision to COPPA
A recent revision to Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) (http://www.ftc.gov/os/fedreg/2013/01/130117coppa.pdf) which came into effect 1 July 2013 does not allows US-based websites from collection of geolocation information from children, such as Internet Protocol addresses (IP). Nitrome Wiki is hosted on a US server and hence has to comply with US laws.

MediaWiki's use of IP
MediaWiki tracks all anonymous contributions through the IP which they are posted from. IP is the internet addresses of your gateway to the Internet. This is an important tool for us as it helps us better identify users, and provides us the means to tackle disruptive acts such spamming, vandalism and uncivil behaviour.

IP of registered users are also recorded, though as such users can be easily identified by their username, this IP information is strictly archived. This information will only be accessed by the webmaster only for the investigation of the most severe of disciplinary offences such as sockpuppetry or vote-rigging, which can be carried out through the abuse of multiple accounts.

Risk of tracking through IP
IP is also a form of geolocation information. Through tools such as whatismyIP, an individual can find out the geographical location of a child's internet access point, and hence approximate the location of the child in the world. The safety of the child can be further jeopardised if the child reveals personal information.

Blocking of anonymous editing
If we were to allow collection of IP information, our webmaster would have to receive parental consent, which would be impractical to do so. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to all, especially to our young readers who are most affected.

Nitrome Wiki recommends that contributors sign up for an account as long as they are no longer children
Since there are no restrictions prohibiting the collection of IP from anyone aged 13 and above, anyone above the age of 13 can sign up for an account for free. You only need an email address and your birthday (to verify your age). Your generous contributions will be fully credited to you on the edit history of each page, ascribed to your member-name. You will also gain access to all the privileges of a member, such as the chatroom, your own profile and talk page, ability to create blogs and upload photos and more.

Summer holidays and logo

I know I used to edit more in past occassions, however, I just prefer to avoid editing here a little bit.

This is because I believe the wiki is fine as it is, and you no longer need my contributions. It's not like it's just because my edits get reverted, but I think that because of them to be getting reverted, I'm doing something wrong.

And yeah, you may probably notice that I don't like to have my edits reverted that much... it makes me feel like I'm always doing something wrong/bad so I'm not sure myself, or that my edits are pointless.

And I know that I haven't been like the other users that contribute a lot, so I apologise for that.

Oh, and another thing actually. Does the Nitrome Wiki allow british vocabulary? For example, changing "needs" to "has got to have" - is that allowed? Or is it just prefered like the US spelling? Too many templates!

Hey. I've found that this article Ice (Ice Breaker) has got too many disambigunation templates. And I believe some of them should simply be deleted, or.. I don't know. Because of the following reasons:

• First of all, on top of the article there is one template which I believe is enough, as it clearly (in my opinion anyway) generalises about the sections it has got.
• I find it pointles adding a template to the beginning of each section, because of the above reason and also, what the template says can be considered to be wrong - it says "This article is about..." when it appears to be actually a section only.

Solution: keeping the one on the top of the article and deleting the rest of them.

If you believe it's better to keep the templates however, I would suggest that at least we should create special templates that may read "This section is about..." and use it for the sections only, keeping the top one.

Thanks very much! Well, Mutiny has always been a game I like a lot, so I guess that now that I had completed it it was time to keep up with the edits. And the images thing was something I wanted to do since quite a long time, but eventually I would give up trying. Now I'm going to focus more on the writing part of these enemies articles.

And well, it has been hard... pretty hard indeed. I had to beat the whole game again, because my saves (all, except Colourblind's saves, oddly) were reseted.

And now... it is as if the long games list on my user page had - from one moment to another - been thrown to the rubbish can. How bad, isn't it? Hello Nobody! I've got a big doubt about the names of Ribbit's enemies, which is if the fact that their given names are official is true or not. You may view them here .

I believe users around named each enemy themselves, as none of those names is mentioned in the game. Perhaps we should use the unofficial games template, shouldn't we?

Explanation, just in case you want one

I've managed to crack it. So some noob put an open <noinclude> tag for some strange reason, and for an even stranger reason didn't close it. Now, as you might have noticed, my signature's template is directly transcluded onto my navbar template. The fact that there was an unclosed noinclude at the end of my signature not only stopped the closing </div> tag being carried with the navbar (making the navbar styling spill out onto the page), but also made sure that the former would be very hard to spot, as the tag was also at the end of the navbar itself; that meant that nothing else apart from that closing tag was left out in the transclusion, causing no visible change to the navbar itself to occur and thereby giving me no clues whatsoever as to what the problem was. What program do you use for recording the videos you upload on Youtube? I think I'd have to quit using Bandicam, since it generates a text on the top part of the videos, and it is rather annoying.

Uploading new versions of files

If you're uploading a new version of a file, it's normal for the update to not show immediately after you've saved the changes. You just need to wait, and the changes should take place after a few minutes, maybe an hour at most. Sometimes adding ?action=purge to the end of the url should help, but you don't need to keep uploading the same image over and over, and you certainly don't need to upload it under a different name, unless you don't see any changes after a day.   Random-storykeeper 20:22, August 15, 2013 (UTC)

Not really that hard to find. Here's a brief file map which I hope would help you.

Start from your Main Drive, on which your Windows is installed. Normal it would be C:

From there, Go to User> (Your Computer Account Name)> AppData> Roaming> Macromedia> Flash Player> #SharedObjects> (random-jumbled-letters)

Note that AppData is a hidden folder, so you the easy way in is just to type it into the address bar.

If a user presses the "Upload Photo" they will see a message not to add fanon. Unless it wasn't you who added that.

Dear NOBODY...

'Ello, this is AC4E. If you may not have noticed, I finished my comic series NMDFFM. Can it be September's featured article on the Fanfiction wiki please? I worked hard to finish it, with a grand total of 98 episodes. I almost developed arthritis in my spine because of my countless hours working on them. To be honest, I don't think you really care about the things I do, but if you take the time to think about it, you're trying to calculate how many sweat-filled, brainstorming hours it took this gal to finish her endearing series. To be honest, it took me until 6 AM to draw certain scenes in the comics (Y'know the scene where Bennet slaps Safety for being a moron? I doubt it, but that was one of the scenes that took long to draw).

So please, think about it (if there are other people who want their stuff featured, I'd be glad to wait in the hiatus line).

Idea with the logos

Hello Nobody! When I was on vacation, I could check out the Wiki some days with my smartphone, and I noticed the current wiki logo isn't seen correctly with the WikiaMobile skin because it becomes smaller. When I came back to the computer, I asked in the Community forums and found a good idea: with some code, I can change the current logo only with oasis skin. If we do that, the defaut logo will be a bigger one without characters, made for mobile devices, and the monthly logo will be added with MediaWiki codes. What do you think? I'll tell you what happened: Pjray, RSK and me were on chat. Pjray started to "have lots of ideas". After that, he said he wanted to become an admin, I told him that he didn't need the adminship. I'm not sure if anyone else has awarded you with this, so allow me to be the first. Why? Well, because, why not? :D

Actually, it's because I wanted to say "goodbye". You are, after all, the first editor I ever spoke to on the wiki, and over the years, I'd say you're probably one of the few editors I've seen change drastically in terms of editing styles. You used to misplace "their" with "there" on a lot of articles and it really irritated me. XD Also, I remember I used to ask a lot of questions on your talk page because I didn't know much. You never really responded to them, and I thought I was bugging you because you responded to other users' messages but not mine. XD I guess I do have to thank you for that, because I learned to be more independent and not depend on a single user for learning everything. Nonetheless, as users who happen to live on the opposite ends of Canada, we saw the wiki grow and thrive. It has changed a lot, because we did great things with it.

But overall, your diligence with keeping up with the wiki has not gone unnoticed. Not by me, anyways. You have shown yourself to be an exemplar editor for the entire wiki. After all, it is the new users who become great contributors that come to you for advice on how the wiki runs.

Judging by my last "leave" post, I know I won't be gone forever, but I can't guarantee anything, so I'll just assume I won't be editing Nitrome Wiki after tomorrow. My plan is to stay focused on editing Nitrome Pixel Love Wiki (if I ever have time to edit), so I'd like to remain an admin there. You can, however, remove the "rollback" rights from my username. I'll remove the admin rights from my userpage tomorrow, since I want to delete some of my user subpages first.

Re: A revision to the avatars template

Hi there, I just did the revision to the Avatar template. It was a hard task because the reward template was made for both unlockable avatars and unlocked avatars on default and above that also for badges. So, welcome 3 new templates on your wiki (which will get documentation soon). Template:Reward is unused and may be deleted if you can do that. This will probably be not the latest revision. Video spoilers contain a strong message explaining to the users why it is hidden and I'm looking forward to add these as well in this template. Well thanks for pointing this out, I already warned him. I noticed that he has also stolen hundreds of ideos uploaded by others without giving them credit. If he doesn't listen to me then I'm sorry that I can't do anything because YouTube asks for my personal infromatio such as address and full name just to report someone. Sorry but YouTube isn't really that good of a company. (Youtube Partners say that too.)

Problem with logos

Hello NOBODY! I think this year I'll have more time to edit here, because I used to be slow at doing my homework and I spent twice the time I should. This year I'm being a lot more organized, so I'm going to have more free time. But that wasn't the topic I wanted to talk about.

The last months, more less since the release of Icebreaker iOS, Nitrome doesn't release many games/features, even releasing one flash game each two months. In July and August, I could make a logo thanks to the profiles and IB iOS, but if Nitrome doesn't release anything on monday (and I doesn't look like it's going to happen), I wouldn't have anything to make next logo. I think we should create a forum on whether or not we should write articles on these beta pages, as some members of the community might not agree with it. Plus, there is a risk that Nitrome will shut down the domain if they see all of this beta content being released, as they did with the recent one.

A bit of grammar

Hi NOBODY! You're right, themself is not a word in the English language. But when speaking in terms of the player, themselves is not correct either. This is because "player" is singular and "themselves" is plural. That's really a moot point, considering we use the pronoun "they" when referring to the player anyways, and using he/she also has its issues (who comes first?). It's not the most grammatically correct, bu using "they" as a pronoun for the player at least keeps it more gender neutral. The only workaround I can suggest is referring to a group of players rather than just one. Or, in the case of that Gunbrick glitch, focus more on the character of the game. A bit of testing

When you edited the pick ups page (of Tiny Castle), you wrote that turkey restores 2 life. I tested all of the pick ups at 1 life only and saw that all of the food heals 1 life, even the turkey. I also tested the points:

• All of the food gives no points
• The golden coins gives 10 points
• The orange gems gives 50 points
• The bags of money gives 100 points

Woop I'm back

Got a final exam on Thursday, but after that, I'm pretty much free for the rest of the month. It's time to return and take my rightful place on the throne do what I do best: annoying users with the talk of verifiability and proper referencing. Or maybe not. :D

I noticed the icons in Template:Icons have been affected by a recent change Wikia implemented. It causes our lovely icons used for featured articles and Touchy compatible games to be partially hidden by three giant "share" icons. It's a bit of a nuisance, but it might be fixable by changing around some code in CSS.

Knowing you, the request of asking you to go and make these adjustments would most likely lead to a "Sure" that never gets carried out. Plus, you probably have some other project in mind that needs to get done. Thus opens the request, hinted in the worst subtle way possible. Did you try importing the page to Nitrome Fanfiction Wiki? The import tool makes it a lot easier to transfer pages from one wiki to another. It's not a lot of work to do so, if that's your big concern.

Nitroem X-mas story

There are already so many years since I contributed msyelf to the first Nitrome x-mas story that gained so much popularity?

I just re-read it,as well as a few others,getting some nostalgia.

Should we make a 3rd one,dirrectly on the Nitrome wiki (its a story for Nitrome wiki not NFF wiki).Maybe just us,and a few old users like TNY,Santi,TCG,Axiy,Lilo,and obviosly,we can not exclude the new contribuitors that would love! to join our wikis xmas tradition!

Activation of article comments

GASP I'm going to activate article comments for just a minute or two to examine something. Overlapping definitions

Who said that an obstacle isn't harmful, or that interactive objects, by definition, have to be beneficial to the player? Or that hazards cannot be enemies? An obstacle just prevents progress or the character from passing through. It does not have to be harmless; in fact, an enemy in Skywire could technically be considered an obstacle if the cable car couldn't pass through it. I would also argue that enemies are a more specific categorization of hazards since they are "potentially dangerous" and that hazards are a specific type of interactive object - one that harms the player. Some categorizations for these objects can overlap (ex. Water in Bomba is both hazardous but can be used to float bombs).   Random-storykeeper 00:49, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

Well yes and no. Think of it like the "General" section in game navbox templates: characters and games tend to go in this section, right? Everything could be considered "general", since this categorization encompasses the overall components found within a game. Of course we could put every article relating to the game into this "General" category, but that would make the template appear disorganized and quite daunting to navigate. Many of these links can be separated into more specific categories, like "Hazards" to define the general links that cause harm. For categories, the general rule of thumb on this wiki right now is to only use the most specific type of category to tag a components article with. Of course, this doesn't really apply to games and their genres at the moment, just components. We probably don't want to play around with moving categories a lot until we can get a bot.

If a hazard harms "the player", is this not a form of interaction? To interact means to have an effect on something. Hazards interact with the player by harming them, usually on contact. This harm is an effect that results with the player (or their character, pardon me) interacting with this "object".

Using "obstacles" as a categorization requires a different definition altogether. Obstacles should be entities that hinder or prevent progress. Some obstacles can be hazardous. Some are more interactive. I'd say obstacles can also be considered interactive objects in some cases because there is an interaction between the character and the obstacle. The player cannot pass through an obstacle, and this is considered an effect. In some cases, obstacles, at the same time, cause harm to the playable character. Yes, that makes them hazards, but also obstacles.

I'm not certain if we want to use these overlapping characteristics to categorize and just go with a guideline like "all pages are only categorized by their most specific category". What this idea of overlaying these types is that it allows for some quick explanations, such as:

• • An interactive object is an entity that can have a direct or indirect effect on the player
  • A hazard is an interactive object that causes harm or potential harm to the player
  • An obstacle is an interactive object that is specifically designed to prevent the player from passing through it.
  • An enemy is a life-like hazard that is capable of attacking the player.

Just a rough sketch, but that's the idea. Rather than having to redefine the terms, define one term using a previous term. I wasn't planning on using this to categorize all hazards with interactive objects by the way, but more for the purpose of having some form of viable explanation for components of games that kind of waver between the strict definitions of hazards and interactive objects, for example.   Random-storykeeper 07:55, December 30, 2013 (UTC)

Paraphrase please

Sources that are used in Jelly Beanstalk (or any article for that matter) should not directly copy-paste quotes, but rather, be paraphrased. The amount of information retrieved from these sources should not be longer than the article itself. Linking to a reference already allows readers to review and verify that the information posted on the wiki is accurate. Essentially, the article should be using the writer's words to present the information, with sources to back it up.

You can integrate quotes within sentences if necessary; however, do not copy entire comments, articles or descriptions and present them on the article in the same form they are on the source. Of course, you may have been planning to change this, considering you've recently added a WIP to the page. Hazardous functions

Hazards don't cause a loss of health, but they do post a "potential" danger to the character. We have pages such as Wind (Frost Bite), classified as a "hazard", but as you know, wind in Frost Bite does not cause a loss of health every time it blows in the climber's face. It can still be considered hazardous, however, since it does have the potential to push the climber off cliffs and into spike pits if the player isn't careful enough.

If you're okay with this tree branching concept of defining component terms, and only plan on using the most specific category tags for categorization, then you won't really have to change categories around. We'll just need to rewrite the category text/make an article that defines these terms in the same manner that was suggested above.   Random-storykeeper 06:07, January 4, 2014 (UTC)
