RE:Untitled[edit source]

Hello NOBODY, would like to ask about your recent removal of youtube tags. If I read the staff blog post correctly, youtube tags are going to be outdated, and all youtube videos embedded by the tag would be automatically uploaded unnecessarily to Nitrome Wiki. (pardon the adjective and adverb overload!) This is bad... SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 15:58, June 12, 2013 (UTC)

What are you asking me about? You asked why I was removing the youtube tags, and then you answered your own question. --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 21:28, June 12, 2013 (UTC)

Oh, I foresee a conflict with our rule of only embedding non-official videos, as any videos embedded would now be automatically "uploaded". SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 15:30, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
I've eliminated all Youtube tags that would upload off topic videos (the page hasn't updated yet, but if you go to all places where Youtube tags are used, you'll see how they are either not used for embedding, or have been removed). --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 19:43, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
Considering the number of users that have embedded videos on pages in the past, I don't think it's right just to remove them and leave it at that. We owe the community some sort of explanation and at least a workaround solution to this.  Talk Random-storykeeper Contributions 22:42, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
But there isn't a work around solution, unless the video policy is modified. Should I place some templates on pages that have had their video reduced to a link? --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 22:57, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
I personally think we should have waited, and brought it up as a discussion instead of just editing others' blog posts and user pages. It's almost like an invasion of property, and done without warning, too.
There is a workaround solution, actually. I've seen several templates on various wikis that allow users to embed a YouTube video like before. However, it requires adding additional JS.  Talk Random-storykeeper Contributions 23:01, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
The only reason I rushed was because I thought the videos would be uploaded immediately, as such, an admin not knowing about the situation may delete the videos (the most plausible answer). --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 23:44, June 13, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, we do have to let the community know, to justify our actions, for accountability, and to make the community aware of the change in function of the <youtube> tag. Ayernam was unaware and ended up uploading videos to the wiki a few days ago. SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 07:13, June 18, 2013 (UTC)

Re: RE:Miniclip's Nitrome game awards[edit source]

They are related to Nitrome related games on Miniclip (they follow the same ways the Disney and Christmas awards which is also listed! ) and in Chrononical order! :)   Sim533

Awesome! Thank you - it was awesome to see that Miniclip is being mentioned here somewhere on the Nitrome Wiki. I've been playing games on MC since 2007 and joined the MC forum early 2012. But then the forum got hacked and Miniclip is going downhill as nobody of the staff is really doing anything else than 8 ball pool multiplayer (the game has 100K players at every time a day), the rest is being left. All what is broken stays broken. That also means that you actually cannot find the description of promo awards a month later than the release. I had to dig up the descriptions for the promo awards. So, please keep it updated, and I also try to keep an eye on it.   Sim533

Public Announcement: New Account Requirement on Nitrome Wiki[edit source]

preliminary discussion: http://nitrome.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog_comment:SQhi/What%3F!%3F_Anonymous_editing_is_now_blocked_on_Nitrome_Wiki/@comment-SQhi-20130703040630

Hello people, this is SQhi. As we know at the start of July anonymous editing was blocked on Nitrome Wiki network. The purpose of this discussion is to bring the active and prominent users together to inform our readers and followers of this drastic change.

I am sending this message to NOBODY, Santi, Ayernam, Emite, Takeshi and NTPYTO. If you feel that anyone else should be brought into the discussion, please let me know (talk page).

The first three steps I am proposing are as follows.

1. Through Wikinews. I suggest this entry.

  • 21 July - It is now necessary to have a Nitrome Wiki account to edit and comment on Nitrome Wiki and its sister wikis. This is due to changes in US law which does not allow our website to track IP addresses of children. If you would like to gain access to editing, commenting and more, please sign up for an account. You do need to be thirteen or older. official press release

2. Through banner on our Main Page (and/or through SiteNotice)

Dear readers, you now need to sign up for a Wikia account to edit and comment on Nitrome Wiki and its sister wikis. Changes to US law in which our website is hosted prevents us from tracking anonymous contributions from children using IP addresses. IP addresses can be used to approximate the location of internet access of children. official press release

3. The official press release through a blog entry.

  • Since 1 July 2013, it is now necessary for all editors and blog commenters on Nitrome Wiki and its sister wikis(Fan Fiction Wiki and Pixel Love Wiki) to have a valid Wikia account.
  • This is because of changes in US legislation which prohibits US-hosted websites from collecting certain information from children including IP addresses. Nitrome Wiki is hosted on US servers.
  • Unfortunately, IP addresses is the means through which our software MediaWiki tracks anonymous contributions, hence, anonymous contributions are disabled.

Revision to COPPA
A recent revision to Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) (http://www.ftc.gov/os/fedreg/2013/01/130117coppa.pdf) which came into effect 1 July 2013 does not allows US-based websites from collection of geolocation information from children, such as Internet Protocol addresses (IP). Nitrome Wiki is hosted on a US server and hence has to comply with US laws.

MediaWiki's use of IP
MediaWiki tracks all anonymous contributions through the IP which they are posted from. IP is the internet addresses of your gateway to the Internet. This is an important tool for us as it helps us better identify users, and provides us the means to tackle disruptive acts such spamming, vandalism and uncivil behaviour.

IP of registered users are also recorded, though as such users can be easily identified by their username, this IP information is strictly archived. This information will only be accessed by the webmaster only for the investigation of the most severe of disciplinary offences such as sockpuppetry or vote-rigging, which can be carried out through the abuse of multiple accounts.

Risk of tracking through IP
IP is also a form of geolocation information. Through tools such as whatismyIP, an individual can find out the geographical location of a child's internet access point, and hence approximate the location of the child in the world. The safety of the child can be further jeopardised if the child reveals personal information.

Blocking of anonymous editing
If we were to allow collection of IP information, our webmaster would have to receive parental consent, which would be impractical to do so. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to all, especially to our young readers who are most affected.

Nitrome Wiki recommends that contributors sign up for an account as long as they are no longer children
Since there are no restrictions prohibiting the collection of IP from anyone aged 13 and above, anyone above the age of 13 can sign up for an account for free. You only need an email address and your birthday (to verify your age). Your generous contributions will be fully credited to you on the edit history of each page, ascribed to your member-name. You will also gain access to all the privileges of a member, such as the chatroom, your own profile and talk page, ability to create blogs and upload photos and more.

Closing Statement
Nitrome Wiki congratulates Nitrome on their official launch of Nitrome Profiles.

With the release of Nitrome Profiles, it may be a good time to sign up for a Nitrome Wiki account as well. Your account will give you full access to Nitrome Wiki, Fanfiction Wiki and Pixel Love Wiki. See you around ^^

I like the idea and I support the 1st step, but I think a banner would be too noticeable. We could add it to Help:Editing instead. About the blogs, in the 1st step we can directly link to the official blog instead. I say this because anyway if people try to edit, a message will appear, so they will be know by the people anyway. What do you think? Fault http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/nitromefanfiction/images/8/82/FauSign.png Liner 19:25, July 20, 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Santi. I think using a notification instead of a banner, as well as linking to the official blog, would be better. -- http://images.wikia.com/nitromefanfiction/images/thumb/b/be/Auto_peg.png/25px-Auto_peg.png Ayernam Salve amicus! Quid agis? 19:45, July 20, 2013 (UTC)
Alright, so wikinews, notification and official blog. Here's my reason for each option.
  1. Wikinews. It will remain visible publicly for a months to come, so occasional visitors can also be informed.
  2. Wiki-wide blue-box notification. Yes, the one addressed to registered users which we see every time we log on. Highly visible, quick and effective to disseminate information to all visitors.
  3. The official release. All announcements lead here. This blog also acts as the anchor, to which we can link to if we want to announce on Facebook and Twitter even.
SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 05:10, July 21, 2013 (UTC)
The problem with the Wiki-wide blue box is that it will appear over the current one, this current one being the one that informs users about fanart. We could do this if we could get another box to go to the left side of the page. --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 21:24, July 21, 2013 (UTC)
I think we should make it as easy to spot as possible, without being obtrusive. We should do the Wiki News and maybe a banner on the main page. I'm wrapped up in other activities at the moment, but I'll be glad to assist if you need advice or any help. I'll try to participate in the discussion as best I can. http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120404012358/nitromefanfiction/images/thumb/3/3c/Takeshi64_FN0_Font.png/220px-Takeshi64_FN0_Font.pnghttp://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/nitromefanfiction/images/4/49/Takeshi_running.gif 00:44, July 22, 2013 (UTC)
@NOBODY Well, we often have problems with the overlapping blue boxes anyway. Too often have Wikia-wide blue boxes been superimposed on our own. Looks like we need to do some repositioning anyway. In fact, this may be important enough for us to temporarily replace our image-uploading reminder. Since the main concern about that is having new users run into the image rule, we can add it to our automatic welcome message. Plus, we already do have a reminder on the file upload page.SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 00:54, July 22, 2013 (UTC)
@Takeshi Santi seems to feel that a banner is too noticeable, but yes a banner really is eye-catching. Yet, isn't this a public announcement after all? SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 00:54, July 22, 2013 (UTC)
Adding these announcements isn't a bad idea, really. As for the blue boxes, couldn't we just re-position them to be a bit above the other ones? The bottom-most spot for official Wikia announcements, the next higher up one for the Fanart announcement, and the one on top for the no-unregistered users announcement.
Also, just for clarification, where did you want to put that other blue box on the main page? https://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140119195727/nitrome/images/thumb/b/b3/Jack_Frost_running.PNG/36px-Jack_Frost_running.PNGEmitewiki2 https://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140119195727/nitrome/images/thumb/9/9e/Purple_Frost_running.png/36px-Purple_Frost_running.png 19:37, July 22, 2013 (UTC)
@Emitewiki: I'm not sure if this is possible, but it might be possible to place wiki wide blue boxes horizontally (this happens if there's a wiki notification and you have new messages).
@SQhi: The problem is, many users who upload images do it through the visual editor upload button, where it is impossible to place a message that you can't upload fanart, as the only things you can edit are buttons, and adding the necessary content to the buttons breaks the buttons. And adding something through the welcome message usually doesn't work, as many people's first edit was uploading fanart (which would trigger the welcome message, but after they make an edit).
And the reminder on the file upload page is only when Special:Upload is gone to directly (which I believe no one uses), and on multiupload (which I think is only what me and a few experienced users use). However, being able to place notifications horizontally may be possible, along with editing the "Upload file" name. --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 22:25, July 22, 2013 (UTC)

Hi people, thank you for participating in this discussion. Since there is strong support for the wikinews option thus far, I'll get it ready to put it into effect. Before that though, I do need your consent for the official "press release". Thank you. Also, let's do decide together on what other channels to communicate this to our readers and anonymous contributors. (banner, bluebox, fb, twitter etc) SQhi(talk)Wiki Planner 04:52, July 24, 2013 (UTC)

No Fanart Announcement[edit source]

I split this discussion off as it would be neater to split this from the main discussion here. I suspect that the reason so many new members upload fanart and personal images is probably because of the add photo box new members get on their user page that encourages them to do so. Shall we have it removed?

Well, sometimes people just upload fanart to place on their page when the box isn't there. However, I'll look into adding a message below the "Upload" words of upload boxes. --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 13:15, July 24, 2013 (UTC)

Transfering flash game save data[edit source]

Hello SQhi! I'm sorry, but I don't have enough time to write my full response to your message (I'll get to it in 12 hours, I currently don't have enough time now). However, do you possibly know how to transfer game saves from one computer to another?

One computer I use has Nitrome Must Die levels 1-90 on it, while my main computer has only levels 1-20. I tried to transfer them today, but for some reason, it still retains my old game saves. I've cleared my cache also. Do you possibly know how to transfer game saves (and for them to work) on to another computer? --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 02:33, July 21, 2013 (UTC)

I actually wasn't the one who did the transfering, it was someone else. I'll get from them what they did for the transferring. --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 21:26, July 21, 2013 (UTC)
Actually, what I only need to know is what folder flash game saves are saved. I use Windows 7. --Talk to NOBODY  Eskimo 1.png 22:25, July 22, 2013 (UTC)

I thought that Takeshi himself cancelled his second RFA, "If you consider me to be a mediocre user or that I used to be a good user, I'll cancel this too. I won't become an admin with the head admin thinking I used to be good.", but after reading some messages on talk pages, I noticed you are right. Anyway, maybe we should first ask Takeshi if he wants to be an admin, he would've changed his opinion. Fault http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/nitromefanfiction/images/8/82/FauSign.png Liner 10:08, September 6, 2013 (UTC)
My attitude towards adminship has not changed, though in my opinion SQhi would make a better admin. He'd have more use for admin powers, he'd be able to close discussions, and while I would do the same if I were an admin, I think at the moment he's more qualified. My first RFA I canceled because of school, but I realized that I didn't have to be on 3 hours a day to do good work as an admin. Checking by a couple times a day and checking for problems would be sufficient. Anyways, I'm not sure what we should do with the other RFAs, but we'll think of something.
